About Doug
Douglas A Adams
The frustrated artist
Doug Adams always wanted to be a painter and/or a professional photographer. From his early working life he produced a vast portfolio of work, mainly landscapes, taking inspiration from his travels from 1974 - 1987. However he stopped painting in 1987 after returning from Australia. He didn't do any more painting for some 7 years finally producing 3 drawings "for his flat" (A surprisingly colourless space!) in 1994 . His work up to this time he calls his "naive years" and is generally lighter and brighter in feel, more realistic and photographic in nature.
From 1994 to 2000 he produced very little "finished work" but he did build a large collection of ideas and photos for "when I have the time". Although the transition to create that time started as early as 1991 he didn't break free until the new millennium. His work from 2000 on is deeper, more interpretive and experimental, but still using the *scape as his jumping off point.
A love of Colour
Very fond of the Impressionists and Post Impressionists, in particular Cezanne and Gauguin in their working of colour. He is also a great admirer of El Greco, for the "relaxed" brush stoke used. Influences also include Hofbauer, Kandinsky, Lhermitte, Langlois, McCubbin, Rembrandt and Turner to name just a few! And has interpreted some of their work producing interesting and original variations.
Doug Adams is self-taught although he attributes much of his love for the arts to his teachers in the '60s and early '70s. He does not to this day consider himself an artist, but more a technician.
